Among others, the educational school of Chonnam University faced a strong need for a newer and bigger build-ing as many departments under the educational school had been dispersed over different buildings due to its growing size and lack of space.

While proudly boasting a century-long history, Chonnam Na-tional University inevitably has some worn out buildings in its campus. Among others, the educational school of Chonnam University faced a strong need for a newer and bigger build-ing as many departments under the educational school had been dispersed over different buildings due to its growing size and lack of space. The Education Convergence Center Project started against such backdrop, tearing down an old building to construct an educational center that can accommodate all 11 departments of the educational school of Chonnam National University. Under the key project theme of integra-tion and convergence, the main design concept was to create atriums. Indoor and outdoor atriums were included in the construction plan to provide space for relaxation and com-munication. The plan also provided separation between spac-es of different nature, by allocating 5-storied lecture tower at the southern part of the center, while placing 10-storied research office buildings for professors at its north. Bricks were mainly used for the exterior walls with a hint of granite stones and exposed mass concrete as a highlight.
